2006 Congresswoman of the Year: Cynthia McKinney

Cynthia McKinney has always exhibited the kind of courage that excites Americans from coast to coast.  She is a strong supporter of human rights and civil.   She tackles the issues others are afraid to touch.

She was among those who opposed the seating of the Florida Bush electors in 2001 and the Ohio Bush electors in 2006, showing more courage than the leadership of either House of Congress.

She opposed USA-PATRIOT and Bush’s trumped up war of terror. In 2002, she spoke the question most Americans wanted asked: whether Bush had foreknowledge of 9/11. In 2004, she held a citizen’s commission to allow the families of those killed on 9/11 to examine information about the unexplained events of the day.   In July, 2005, Ms. McKinney held a well-attended congressional briefing on Capitol Hill to address outstanding issues regarding the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Ms. McKinney has helped lead the fight against the Iraq War and against the attacks on our civil liberties and civil rights.  She has worked hard for voter rights across America.

The evidence indicates that she won her July 2006 primary outright.  However, because of a lack of a paper trail and documented cases of computerized vote switching, she was pushed into an August 8th runoff.  On that day, her name was not even on the computer screen in some precincts in her district.  Where her name was on the screen, voters saw their McKinney votes switched by the computer to Johnson votes.  McKinney voters were heavily harassed by the police while attempting to vote.  Calls were made by concerned voters and citizens to Howard Dean’s, Juanita Millender-McDonald’s and Rahm Emmanuel’s offices on the day of the runoff.  These individuals stood by and did nothing as democracy in Georgia was stolen by Diebold for Republican-backed Hank Johnson.  The result was that Republican-backed Johnson is being sent to the House of Representatives in the place of a great Congresswoman would have retained her seat if the voters had been able to vote for her.  For the people of Georgia, November 7th was a hollow victory because they had lost their finest and most beloved Congresswoman for two years.

The voting on the award took place before Cynthia introduced her impeachment legislation against Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld.  This legislation is proof that Cynthia listened to the voters of November 7th while the leaders of the Democratic Party have decided to throw away the good will of the voters and take America in a direction the voters do not want and did not vote for.  To the people of Georgia, the voters lost on August 8th and against when Pelosi decided to take impeachment off the table.

Cynthia McKinney is the kind of hero who will go down in history books as the greatest leader of all time.  The members of the Patrick Henry Democratic Club are looking forward to Ms. McKinney’s speedy return to Congress.
